Amanda Massey from the Class of 1997 talks about guppies, Elon Musk, and chiropractic care for pets.

Can you tell us a bit about your business?

I am a chiropractor for people and their pets. Using a three-part approach that incorporates chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release techniques, and food-based nutritional counseling, I help people and animals perform at their best, recover from injuries, and prevent reinjury.

How and when did you first come up with the idea?

When I was in high school, I suffered a debilitating back injury that kept me off the horse for six months. Chiropractic care helped me immensely to get back to doing the things that I love to do without medication or surgery. My family also had a horse with a serious hip injury that was treated and rehabilitated by an animal chiropractor, and that inspired me to become an animal chiropractor who also works with people. The horse and rider connection is very special to me, and anyone who is performing at a top level with their horse knows how important being balanced and in sync with your equine partner is.

What has been the most challenging part of running your own business?

I am a much better clinician and doctor than a business owner. Currently, my biggest challenge is creating scalable systems as I pioneer my way through a very niche field of equine and equestrian rehab in multiple states/time zones. I have learned that delegation and automation of administrative tasks, or any task that can be delegated to someone with a better skill set in that area, should be delegated.

What has been the most exciting or surprising part of the journey so far?

Every day is a new adventure! I have met some of the most incredible and inspiring people working with elite athletes, business tycoons, social media icons, and their special animals that make the world turn 'round. Nothing is more satisfying to me than helping someone extend the quality of their pet's life or get them back to doing the activity that they love to do the most.

How did your time at JIS support your venture?

JIS provided me with the most extraordinary educational experience. I had ample opportunities to try and excel in a variety of activities like playing soccer, singing in the choir, drama club with Mr.Schultz, and learning how to draw/paint/create ceramics. The arts and sports department really diversified my palette and also neurologically helped build a more balanced brain and well-rounded global perspective that enabled me to relate to patients from all walks of life.

What was the last book you read?

In the Flo by Alissa Vitti, I highly recommend this book for all women out there!

Who would be your ideal celebrity dinner date (dead, alive, or fictional) and why?

Elon Musk, I would love to pick his brain about a few things off the record.

What was your favorite class/subject at JIS and why?

Science, I loved learning all about ecology and conservation biology. All of the diverse species in the rainforest in Indonesia fueled my passion to continue supporting efforts to conserve habitats for species, learn regenerative farming practices, and reduce my carbon footprint on planet Earth.

What was your favorite spot on the JIS campus?

The guppy pond. I was obsessed with catching and releasing guppies, toads, and frogs, or feeding them bits of my lunch. I also found the fountains to be an incredibly soothing and relaxing place to spend the break between classes.
