Dragon Reflections

During a special reunion on the Cilandak campus, members of the Class of 1995 shared memories and reflections from their time at JIS — from the warmth of the Dragon community to lifelong friendships and memorable experiences that have stayed with them to this day.

Dragon Updates

Ivan Halim (Class of 2008)

Love and Naga Spirit filled the air as Ivan Halim celebrated his wedding surrounded by family, friends, and a strong showing from JIS Alumni. Two of his seven groomsmen were fellow Dragons: Bryan Soedarsono and Aditya Tanojo (Class of 2008).

The celebration also brought together many familiar faces from the Class of 2008 and beyond, including Hendy Kurniawan, James Winata, David Tjiputra, Gregory Surjana, and Frank Hutapea, as well as Matthew Cheung (Class of 2009), and Sita Wibisana (2006), among others. With 1,500 guests in attendance, it was a grand occasion. Congratulations to Ivan and his bride, Tiffany Hartono, as they begin this exciting new chapter together!

Anjuli Gidwani (Class of 2011)

Dragons reunited in celebration as Anjuli Gidwani marked her recent marriage with a reception in Jakarta this January.

After getting married in India in December 2025, Anjuli gathered friends closer to home, including fellow Class of 2011 Alumni (from left) Maureen, Carina, Laura, and Giulia. Congratulations to Anjuli as she begins this exciting new chapter!

1990s

Purnima Kine (Class of 1992)

We were delighted to welcome back Purnima Kine (left), whose indelible JIS experience spanned her formative memories from Grades 2 to 12. She brought along a very special guest: Manjula Solomon, her Grade 9 Anthropology teacher and a dedicated JIS faculty member of 25 years. “She is one of my closest friends and a mentor; a woman who changed my life,” Purnima says of Ms. Solomon. “I love her like my mother.” We’re glad both of them had “the most fabulous time” during their visit!

Purnima now lives in Singapore, where she works as the Director of Sustainability at Kaltimex Energy. Before joining her family’s business, she was a longtime teacher whose career took her to the Canadian International School Bangalore, the American International School Dhaka, and the American Embassy School New Delhi.

Sarah Clune (Class of 1997)

Sarah Clune was thrilled to be back on the Cilandak campus, where she reconnected with former classmate Derice Sumantri (now a member of the JIS Board of Trustees) and retraced the start of her journalism journey.

Sarah first explored reporting as a student journalist with Feedback magazine and is now a producer for PBS News in Washington DC.

2010s

Carina, Anjuli, Giulia, Robbie (Class of 2011)

(From left) Carina, Anjuli, Giulia, and Robbie stopped by the Cilandak campus while in Jakarta for Anjuli’s wedding reception, revisiting the place where their friendship first took root.

They also spent time with one of their favorite teachers, Yuichiro Hara — a fellow JIS Alum from the Class of 1989 — during their visit.

Wilma Soetomo (Class of 2018)

Returning to where her JIS journey began, Wilma Soetomo brought her father along to tour Pattimura Elementary (PEL) and “thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the preserved and new areas of the campus”.

She reconnected with the teachers who supported her growth as a young learner, looking back at cherished memories of formative moments while sharing updates on her path after graduation.

Wilma also expressed an interest in becoming a teacher herself, hoping one day to work at JIS and guide a new generation of Dragons!

Dragons in the Wild

Tareque Farruk (Class of 1987)

Dragons spotted in San Francisco! (From left) Tareque Farruk, Susanna Heilijgers, and Marcel Heijlijgers (Class of 1988) got together to not only catch up on JIS times but also discuss the latest details of a Dragon-organized gathering in Texas.

Tareque had teamed up with fellow Class of 1987 alums Chuch Barret and Kyle Frascarelli to hold a reunion in San Antonio, which took place on February 26-28.

Rya Heirbaut (Class of 1998) & Froukje Boersma (Class of 1997)

Celebrating decades of friendship, Rya Heirbaut (right) and Froukje Boersma caught up with each other for a sunny day out in Noosa, Australia, where Rya currently lives. Over lunch and long conversations, the two friends picked up right where they left off — a reminder that Dragon friendships span years and continents!
