I attended JIS as a second-grader from 1981 to 1992, as a graduating senior. I believe my time at JIS helped shape my ability to connect and engage with the diverse populations of our world. My work in the performing arts, and primarily in theater-casting, has very much been informed by my experience in an international environment.
I have so many [favorite memories]! I was a part of the theater department and did a bunch of shows and musicals in the Fine Arts Theater. I was also a part of the IASAS dance team and got to travel to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Taipei. As a member of Joint Sound, I was able to perform and travel around the world. But maybe I just always loved stepping onto the JIS campus. It always felt like home.
My advice to JIS students would be to follow your curiosity and allow yourself to examine and challenge the boundaries of your comfort zones. Be willing to learn and forgive yourself when you make mistakes, as long as you do better on the other end.
San Diego needs an Indonesian restaurant, stat! So if you know a chef who can make a spicy nasi goreng and authentic ayam gudeg, tell them to email me!
