Jerzy Mirecki, a beloved teacher of physics and mentor to many of his students, passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born in Poland in 1934, Jerzy Mirecki pursued his education despite the hardships of war-torn and post-war Poland. He not only completed his studies but also, straight out of university, joined the ranks of the few teachers who survived the war to share their knowledge with the next generation.

He first taught at schools in Opole and also trained new teachers at the Teaching Methodology Institute. Determined to broaden his horizons, he taught himself English from 78 rpm records and went on to teach physics courses, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, at the United Nations International School (1970–1975).

After returning to Poland, he authored a widely used high school physics textbook (14 editions) before teaching again in English at TASIS Hellenic International School in Greece (1979-1983).  Finally, with his daughter Beata, he moved to Indonesia to teach physics at the Jakarta International School (1983-1987).

Throughout the years, his classrooms were known for both rigor and warmth, where he challenged students to think deeply while supporting them with patience and wry humor. Long before the language of student-centered learning became common, he was already putting it into practice. His guiding principle was simple yet powerful: “I’m not here to teach you, I’m here to help you learn physics.”

Many of his students recall this not only as a classroom motto but as a life lesson that encouraged independence, curiosity, and confidence. Some were even inspired to become physics professors. Jerzy Mirecki’s legacy lives on in the generations of young people he inspired, from Europe to Asia, to look at the world with both wonder and critical thinking. He will be remembered as a gifted teacher, a creative mind, and above all, a kind and generous spirit who believed in the potential of every learner.
