Can you tell us about La Balena?
La Balena is a cozy yet refined Italian-inspired restaurant in South Jakarta, designed as a second home for people to connect over handmade pasta, artisanal bread, and heartfelt conversations. It’s a place that blends elegance with comfort, where food, memories, and community come together.
How and when did you first come up with the idea?
The idea came in 2023, inspired by my own longing for a space that felt like both a sanctuary and a gathering point. I wanted to recreate the nostalgia of family kitchens, village meals, and timeless hospitality—while adding a modern touch for today’s diners.
What has been the most challenging part of running your own business?
Balancing creativity with practicality has been the toughest part. It’s not just about creating beautiful spaces and delicious food, but also about managing teams, handling operations, and making sure the business is sustainable long-term.
What has been the most exciting or surprising part of the journey so far?
The most rewarding surprise has been seeing how quickly people embraced La Balena as “their place.” Guests come not only for the food, but for the feeling of comfort and belonging. Watching strangers become regulars, and regulars become friends, has been the most exciting part.
How did your time at JIS support your venture?
JIS instilled in me the confidence to be curious, to take risks, and to think creatively. The diverse community exposed me to different perspectives and cultures, which deeply shaped the way I approach hospitality and storytelling in my restaurants.
What was the last book you read?
The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga — a book that really shifted the way I think about freedom, responsibility, and how we shape our own lives.
Who would be your ideal celebrity dinner date – and why?
I would love to have dinner with Anthony Bourdain. His curiosity, honesty, and way of connecting people through food always inspired me. Sharing a meal with him would be a masterclass in storytelling, culture, and humanity.
What is your best memory of JIS?
One of my best memories is the sense of community — from school events to everyday moments with friends, JIS always felt like a place where everyone belonged. It wasn’t just about academics, but about growing up in a truly international and supportive environment.
What was your favorite place to be at JIS?
The library. It was a calm space where I could think, dream, and discover new ideas — a perfect balance to the energy of the rest of campus.
